  • What are some good perennial flowers for a raised bed in my yard?

    Flowers 31.10.2010 2 Comments

I have been using the spot for burning brush and cardboard, but I want to pretty up my yard, so I am going to put a raised flower bed there instead. It gets sun almost all day. I just want some pretty flowers, hopefully easy to grow, that I won’t have to re-plant each year.

  • I need easy flowers and plants to put in an entrance walkway?

    Flowers 05.09.2010 6 Comments

We just bought our house last summer and we are totally clueless to landscaping. There is a flower bed about 6×1 right outside the entrance walkway. Ofcourse there is nothing but weeds in it right now but I would like to put something in there that is easy to maintain that can resist alot of direct sun. We’re in Texas and temps can get up to 105. Any ideas? Also, do I plant seeds or the flowers you get in the little containers. Much detail is requested as I have no idea what to do.

  • What flowers will grow best on east side of house?

    Flowers 06.06.2010 4 Comments

I live in Zone 7b. I am wanting to do a flower bed next to my house facing east. My thumb is not green. Does anyone have any suggestions as to tall flowers for close to the house, mid-high flowers for the middle, and a good border flower? I would like to do a variety of different colored Foxgloves for next to the house and some Phlox for the border. Any suggestions?
There are no big trees nearby, just a tall thin bush/tree on the south side of the garden that doesn’t realy give much shade. Otherwise it’s pretty much open. It’s in Oklahoma, like I said, zone 7b. so it can get pretty hot. I really don’t want anything taller than about 4′ or so in the back right up next to the house, that’s why I was thinking Foxgloves. Something that is really too much taller than that would be too tall in my opinion. Any more suggestions? So far everything sounds great and maybe my thumb will have a tinge of green this year!

  • What are some good flowers to plant that need a lot of water and sunlight?

    Flowers 27.05.2010 4 Comments

I want to plant a flower garden in the front of my house. My problem is that the spot that I want to garden gets a lot of rain because of the run-off from the roof. This is the only spot that I can put a flower bed for the front of my house. Any ideas on some flowers that are easy to grow?

  • Any ideas on what flowers grow in shaded areas?

    Flowers 19.05.2010 5 Comments

I have a flower bed up against the back of my house and which is completely covered by the overhead deck. I want to plant some plants there, but don’t know which flowers grow best in very shaded areas? Also there is a large rabbit population in my neighborhood and would like to plant flowers that the rabbits wouldn’t be so eager to eat.

    Thank you in advance.
If cat hair works, would dog hair do????

Itsmyopinion – haha what a smart@$$ remark – I like it, sounds like something I would say. ;-)
    Wow!!!
Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming.

The flower bed is just filled up with dirt, weeds, and little pcs of rock. First I need to clean it out I guess but do I use the dirt that’s already in there or do put soil down? If you want to know, I live in Charlotte, NC (Zone 7). I want to plant perennial flowers. I’m new to gardening and want to know how prepare the flower bed, what type of soil I need (if necessary) and any tips on types of flowers to plant. Thanks alot!

  • When planting roses do you go with what you love, or what coordinates?

    roses 31.03.2010 5 Comments

Here is the thing. I love roses. At my former house I had some gorgeous roses. At this current house I have tried planting roses, but my Dogs keep eating them. I am now going to rip out 3 large bushes in the flower bed by the house to plant the roses there. (I have a georgeous flower bed, but there are no roses in it. I know they hired someone to design that flower bed, but for me it isn’t complete without roses).
Now my favorite rose is the first prize rose. It isn’t the most fragrant, but for me those large pink flowers cannot be touched. Now that is funny, because pink is not my favorite color, but I just love that rose. I also am partial to the chicago peace. What would you put? I have room for 4-5 rose bushes. I will admit, over the years, I have had a hard time finding a first prize rose. I am going to try really hard this year. I may need to try more than 2 nurseries, but I am willing to try. Do I give up on my fav.? What would you plant if you had the chance?
